“Hello my name is Margaret and Im addicted to McDonalds fries and their mango pineapple smoothie”
Yeah my addition is real. So when I got a chance to take a look at McDonalds operations during their farm to table event, I jumped at the chance.
So very early one Friday morning, I rode down to San Jose with Brandi of Mama Knows It All and Sharelle of Classy Black Girl to get a inkling of what happends down on the farm. And it was rather interesting.
Up next we heard from Cathy, dietician with McDonalds. She told us about the nutritional background of the food that gets prepared in the restaurants. We even played a few games of where to locate the info (I didnt win 🙁 ) Did you know that you can find the information on the website, the trayliner, product packaging, brochure, and over the toll free phone line. They’re big on sharing, huh?
First stop: Taylor Farms. They are the lettuce supplier for McDonalds based in the city of Salinas. Once there, we had to don the finest in farm wear ie gloves and a hair net before we were allowed to proceed.
Once we were geared up, we heard from Chris and Martin from Taylor Farms. We heard about which areas grew lettuce and strawberries, about the personnel needs to run the farm and the new technologies used in farm work today. The following picture is the new harvester that’s used that takes some of the back breaking labor away from those that work there.
And all the lettuce that was left behind, would be mulched back into the earth for the next harvest. No loss what so ever.
Afterwards, we headed to their processing plant. We got a chance to see how each package is scanned and bar coded all the way down to know what day, which location, and what that lettuce was harvested. That was very interesting to know.
We then boarded the bus to head over to the National Steinbeck Center for a panel discussion from more McDonald’s suppliers and lunch. Around the table were reps from Chitiqua, ARYTZA, Crystal Creamery, Cargill and of course Taylor Farms. Each discussed who their company works with McDonald’s to bring quality food to them to get it to us.
My next post will tell you about the panel discussion as well as our lunch and what I wanted the most about the day. You can also check out more pictures and videos from the day on my Instagram account.
See you in a bit!
